6 Tips for Maintaining Healthy Gums During Hot Weather

High temperatures and outdoor activities can increase dehydration and disrupt daily routines, both of which affect gum health. Warmer months can also mean an increase in sugary, frozen treats, sports drinks, and acidic beverages, which increase the risk of plaque buildup.

In this article, we’ll discuss practical strategies for keeping your gums hydrated, clean, and inflammation-free during the busy warmer months. From the importance of hydration to choosing healthy snacks to keeping your lips protected from the sun, here are our top tips for maintaining healthy gums this summer.

Tip 1: Stay Hydrated to Support Saliva Production

Drinking lots of water is important all year long, but it’s even more essential in the summer months. Hydrating with water helps maintain saliva flow, which naturally cleanses the mouth and neutralizes acids.

Here are some easy ways to ensure you’re staying hydrated during the summer:

  • Carry a reusable water bottle and fill it whenever you can
  • Remind kids (and yourself) to take frequent water breaks when playing outside or taking part in athletic activities.
  • Limit caffeinated beverages that can contribute to dry mouth, such as coffee and soda.
  • Regulate your body temperature and wear cool clothing so you’ll sweat less.
  • Sip water throughout the day, even when you don’t feel thirsty.

Tip 2: Choose Refreshing Snacks Wisely

While drinking lots of water is the easiest way to stay on top of your daily hydration needs, you can also supplement your water intake with certain foods. Opting for snacks high in water content can contribute to the daily hydration needs.

The Mayo Clinic recommends foods such as cucumbers, celery, tomatoes, watermelon, strawberries, grapefruit, peppers, spinach, and broccoli to supplement daily water intake.

Replacing sticky ice pops and other sugary treats with these snacks, or others such as chilled fruit or yogurt popsicles, will not only keep you healthy but will also help you ensure you’re drinking enough water. If you do decide to indulge in sweet treats, make sure to rinse with water or brush 30 minutes after consumption to keep your gums protected.

Tip 3: Maintain a Consistent Oral Hygiene Routine

Summertime can get busy, but it’s important not to lose sight of your daily oral health care routine.

Brush your teeth at least twice per day, and give extra attention to your gumline to remove any excess plaque that has accumulated from a change in diet.  Floss at least twice per day to clear debris between teeth, especially after outings such as BBQs, picnics, or days at the beach.

When traveling, you should also pack a travel-size toothbrush, flossers, and mouthwash so you can be prepared to replicate your oral hygiene routine when on the go. It is also a smart idea to pack small flossers when on hikes or in other places where you won’t have easy access to water.

Tip 4: Protect Lips and Gums from the Sun

You probably are aware that it’s important to keep your skin guarded from the sun by applying sunblock while spending time outdoors. But did you know that it’s also essential to keep your lips and gums protected?

Applying SPF lip balm can shield duplicate lip tissue from UV damage and cracking. You can also try wearing a wide-brimmed hat to reduce direct sun exposure on the mouth and gums. When possible, stay in a shaded area during peak sunlight hours for added precautions.

Tip 5: Watch Out for Sports and Outdoor Injuries

If you’re participating in athletics like soccer, baseball, softball, and skateboarding, or taking advantage of the weather to partake in cycling, running, or climbing, it’s important to keep your mouth fully protected with a mouthguard.

Custom-fitted mouthguards minimize the damage to your gums and teeth from contact-related injuries that can easily occur while playing sports. When not using mouthguards, make sure to store them in ventilated cases and clean them regularly to avoid bacterial growth that can cause infections or bad breath.

After participating in athletic events, inspect your gums for cuts, bruising, or other impacts that may have occurred, and seek dental advice if you notice persistent swelling in the hours and days afterwards.

Tip 6: Schedule Mid‑Summer Checkups

Between kids being out of school, going on vacations, time spent with family and friends, and enjoying the outdoors, it can be easy to get caught up in the hectic summer schedule. However, it’s important for your oral health to schedule a mid-summer cleaning if needed to maintain your gum health.

Professional cleanings can remove tartar that builds up from vacations or sweet treats consumed during the summer. Plus, dentists can apply fluoride varnish or discuss sealants for those with a higher cavity risk, such as children. Early intervention and regular visits to the dentist are the best way to limit gum irritation and prevent more severe periodontal issues.
